Biography

Born in 1972 in St. Louis, Missouri, William began his figurative studies at the St. Louis Artists' Guild while still in high school. Encouragement from his first mentor, Lauren Davis, led him to the Kansas City Art Institute. While ultimately receiving his BFA in graphic design, drawing remained an important part of his work. A return to the St. Louis Artists' Guild brought William in contact with Billy O'Donnell and Jason Dowd, two artists who helped tremendously in the early development of his painting. Work soon took him to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he spent more than 10 years as an award-winning designer.

In 2010, William quit his job, uprooted his wife and children, and enrolled in the Florence Academy of Art, where he spent three years pursuing his interest in realist painting under the tutelage of great painters like Daniel Graves and Jordan Sokol. Further studies with artists such as Peter Zokosky and F. Scott Hess helped him experiment with color and explore contemporary content. With the completion of the MFA at Laguna College of Art + Design, William looks forward to furthering his artistic development while teaching what he has learned to others interested in representational drawing and painting.

Artists' Statement

I am a modern realist painter. I believe that the use of representational imagery is the best way to communicate specific visual information. The concept is simple, but not easy. It requires mastery. By rooting my work in the European tradition, I am able to address complex themes in an accessible manner. Mimesis, however, is not sufficient. I strive to make art that builds upon the virtuosity of the past while also being unabashedly modern and distinctly American. My current work focuses on exalting the domestic scene. As a father I have an excuse to play and to relive the joy and pain of childhood. Being a parent also prompts me to tap into my own fears as I attempt to shield my children from negative experiences. By exploring the psychological connections between my past and present, I am able to approach painting with the wonder of a child filtered through the hard earned skills and wisdom of an adult.
